Curriculum Information

Welcome to our Curriculum page where you can view information on the subject curriculum across the key stages.

We have a three-year Key Stage 3 and a two-year Key Stage 4. This ensures that by the time students make their option choices in Year 9 they have well developed knowledge of the curriculum to help them make informed choices. In Year 9, the last year of Key Stage 3, students start to cover elements of our GCSE courses.

We take great care when grouping students in different subjects. Students are mostly taught in mixed ability classes across the school. Students are set by ability in Maths and Languages from a point in Year 7, this is followed by Science in Year 9. Setting in these three subjects continues into Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11).

CURRICULUM INTENT

We aim to provide a broad curriculum that inspires and motivates. We believe it is important to establish high expectations and want our students to develop a passion for learning.

We believe it is important to establish high expectations and want our students to develop a passion for learning.

We believe in equality and fairness of all students. The school is an inclusive community meaning that we cater for the many varied needs of students and ensure they all have appropriate and meaningful opportunities to learn and progress. Our aims, for all students, are as follows:

Fulfil their potential through:

  • access to a broad curriculum (for as long as possible) that builds knowledge and understanding about our multi-faceted world
  • a varied curriculum that makes them thoughtful and reflective (empathetic) with an appetite for learning
  • passionate teaching and well-developed subject knowledge that engages, stretches and challenges all students (developing resilience)
  • a curriculum that emphasises the value of literacy across all subjects (reading, oracy and extended writing)

Develop self-belief and self-confidence through:

  • an explicit focus on developing character in our students. In part this is delivered through our Personal Development curriculum. In addition to this we encourage students to work in ways that promote communication (discussion/presentation and oracy), collaboration (group work, paired work, team work), creativity (incentive thinking) and critical thinking (problem solving, and personal reflection)
  • the systematic building and development of skills to help students become confident and versatile learners
  • appropriate assessment where feedback and reflection helps students make good progress
  • opportunities for learning beyond the classroom that helps students make meaningful connections with the wider world

Develop a sense of belonging through:

  • preparation and support at key transition points (Year 6 into Year 7, Year 9 into Year 10, Year 11 into Year 12) helping students focus on future pathways and career aspirations
  • promoting physical and psychological wellbeing

Are part of a respectful community that recognises and celebrates diversity through:

  • an explicit focus on spiritual, moral, cultural and social development through a diverse curriculum that references different cultures and beliefs
  • putting inclusion at the heart of the school, finding ways to personalise our support for students, helping them overcome difficulties or barriers to learning
